YOU ARE NOT PREPARED! (That never gets old.)

Weekly Goal Switcheroo!

I am swapping out my weekly goal for this week with next week's planned goal. This week I'll be going for the Veteran's Band of Dominance in place of the Veterans Dreadweave Belt. The band will raise my total stamina by the same amount but raise my damage bonus by 18 instead of the 12 I will get from the belt, and it's cheaper. So, it makes more sense to make the biggest difference as fast as possible to be more helpful if I get into a Karazhan raid.

QQ of the Day

These QQs are classic:
You have been skill-coiled
fel guards intercept stuns you
you can cleanse
Unstable affliction crits you for 3000
you die
Jeebus, are you telling me I could have gone for the 41-point talent in both Affliction and Demonology and I'm just now hearing about it from a paladin?

Or Don't L2Lock...

WoW Insider's Blood Pact series is fast becoming a joke. These articles are full of glaring inaccuracies, and it's clear to me that the author hasn't played this class any time recently. Some of the gems from this week's article include:
Felguard (obtained at level 40, with demonology talents)
No one has 41 talent points at level 40.
Infernal (obtained at level 50): The Infernal is the first of our pets that are summoned out of our control.
Infernals have been summoned under our control at least since 2.1.x.

Please don't read these articles if you're looking to l2lock. You will fail.

Weekly Goal: EZ Moade

So far, I have 12k honor points banked, leaving just shy of 6k honor points remaining on the way to my Veteran's Dreadweave Belt. I might even make a dent into the Veteran's Band of Dominance, which I've already selected for next week's goal. Woot.

Also...I want one of these so bad, and apparently so does everyone else.

Weekly Goal: Veteran's Dreadweave Belt

20 Percent Awesome Makes Up for 80 Percent Suck

The Black Morass...not for weenies.

My weekly goal for this past week required revered reputation with the Keepers of Time, and completing the quest for 'Caverns of Time: Dark Portal' yields more than 8000 reputation points with the Keepers. The instance also serves as the final step in Karazhan attunement. So I figured this weekend I'd just jump in a PUG and knock it out.

Ha...not so much.

I probably ran this instance six or seven times before one of my guild mates in Full House was able to join to help. My first run was the best one before the last one; we got all the way to the second wave after the second boss. We wiped after the hunter lost his connection.

After that it was a steady stream of freakishly bad groups. I lost every roll on every boss drop (although one of the gators randomly dropped a green belt, which I won). I died repeatedly, most notably during the clearing phase of my second- or third-to-last attempt when my group mates would not help get crocs and spiders off me when they were standing right next to me. "After we're done with this mob we can help you." You have died. 6 minutes until release... Somewhere in there I lost my connection for a moment, only to come back to people typing ARAWN YOU F'ING IDIOT and the like...

By the time this ridiculousness ended, I was totally enraged and had taken to typing in all caps (which, ironically, doesn't really help abate the rage...in fact, it seems to feed it). I had wasted an entire PvP holiday on running an instance I had yet to finish. I was tired, I was grumpy, and I was ready to throw my laptop out the window.

I logged out for a few hours and watched a chick flick with my wife. I logged back on once she went to sleep fully expecting more ridiculousness.

When I logged back on, though, one of my guild mates, Unclejesse, grouped up with me. We got a warrior (gnome lady...hilarious visuals) and a healer, and somewhere in there I think we had a rogue.

This was probably the best group I've had since clearing Arcatraz on the first try. The healer had a ridiculous mp5 score, and Unclejesse was a Jedi master when it came to managing the trash mobs attacking Medivh's shield. We had only one death (Unclejesse right before the last boss...doh!) but things were going so well that they didn't even wait for him to make it back (sorry!) before aggroing the last boss, and no one came close to dying. It was amazing.

At the end of the run, I hit revered status with Keepers of Time and finished The Master's Touch. All told, the final run resulted in me getting:That final run made up for the entire weekend. Now I'm Kara attuned and have access to the heroic Caverns of Time instances, and I managed to bank around 10k honor points afterwards towards this week's weekly goal.

The last 20 percent awesome definitely made up for the first 80 percent suck.

Spilled Milk

Okay, so yesterday's QQ of the Day linked to a post that was deleted. But...someone got a screenshot.

Thanks for Tuning In

I am glad they took out the crazy attunement requirements, but I'm not passionate either way.

For one, I enjoy questing, and once you hit level 70, the instances you have access to are the real reward you get as you progress versus the experience reward pre-70. So to a certain extent, your attunements constitute your "leveling" as you get deeper into the endgame.

But...I am also a (unwilling) casual gamer. I play like crazy on days/nights where I have time, but those are few and far between. My erratic schedule of short sessions and the two long weekend sessions means that the only real option for gearing up at a reasonable rate is PvP. Those two factors also mean that I would likely never see the really amazing endgame content like Serpentshrine had the attunement requirements not been removed.

Tobald said (before he quit)
Imagine you plan to go to a cinema to see Spiderman 3, and the guy at the door doesn't let you in because you don't have the ticket stubs proving you have seen Spiderman 1 and 2. Sounds ridiculous? Then why do we accept this sort of thing for our MMORPG end-game?
I agree with that. Video games are one of the few modes of entertainment where we accept this kind of restraint. I also think these kinds of restrictions fall into the realm of "railroad plot" that I hate in pen-and-paper RPGs.

So eh...see you in the corpse pile at SSC.

VOIP and WoW and U

Wired reports on Ventrilo and how it changes the social interaction on WoW. I am mixed on this, as is the author. I would *love* to be able to Ventrilo (if Full House could get a Mac-enabled server coughcough) so that my fingers could be more free for PvP combat. Even when I'm up late next to Laurie, it would make coordination so much easier if I could listen instead of reading text during battles.

However, I totally grant the author's point: part of the fun of WoW is that everything that ranks us in a social hierarchy outside the game is nullified, and we are free to rebuild social links and hierarchies based solely on the parts of ourselves we put forth on the game. Voice chat throws a lot of that out the window.

So...Full House...a Mac driver...yeah...

Afternoon Homework: l2lock

More good tips.

Weekly Goal: Continuum Blade

I have had a lighter play schedule this week, so I have around 100 honor points banked. I plan to do some heavy PvP for the rest of the week, though, but I wonder if I'll be able to even come close to getting any honor gear, even with the reduced honor cost.

Black Morass
is on my radar for this weekend, though, and that means a healthy boost to my Keepers of Time reputation. That will put me in reach of an item I've been drooling over for a long time: the Continuum Blade.

This blade is gorgeous, and it has great +damage. Grabbing this will boost my bonus damage by 36, and if I pair it with the random green drop Shadow Council Orb of the Eagle that I have on my bank alt, it will raise my Stamina by 12 as well.

So. Continuum Blade it is.

Raiding Guide for Warlocks

L2lock this morning.

The Bigger Better Deal

I am obsessed with finding upgrades for my gear. I probably wasted copious amounts of gold on squeezing just +1 Stamina out of any given gear slot on my way to 70 when I could have skipped every second upgrade and been just fine (and come to think of it, I would have probably saved enough for my flying mount or my dreadsteed). And when I read stuff like this, I have this pang for all the gold I wasted, particularly when I could have saved it up for meta gems and to help improve my enchanting skill.

Like many of the respondents to the above post, I wore a piece of quest reward equipment for more than ten levels (twenty?). During the last ten or so levels of my grind, though, equipment slots were swapped out at least once every two levels.

I can't wait until scheduled maintenance is over and I'm able to check out the next piece of honor reward equipment I'll drool over for a week...before getting it. Woot.

Ataris + WoW = Awesome Machinima

The finalists for the Ataris / WoW machinima music videos are up.

LOL of the Day: Uhews

Uhews is one of the well-known personalities from the forums. The general consensus is that he talks down to people, theorycrafts the living daylights out of everything, and generally needs a good public humiliation.

And he gets pwned.

Weekly Goal: ??????

This week there are rumors (but nothing solid) of new honor rewards. Generally this is a good thing. I am a little annoyed, however, that this wasn't communicated very well to the WoW community at large so that, oh, say, a certain warlock would have known to save his 19k honor points from the past week for a new, better item. Oh well.

In light of the honor points/item uncertainty, I will refrain from naming a PvP honor goal this week. Instead, I will aim for 19k honor points, and then buy whatever that gets me at the end of the week.

However...

I am on the last leg of my Kara attunement. That means I have to run Caverns of Time: Opening the Dark Portal this weekend to complete the quest line. Aside from providing the awesome benefit of allowing me into the hottest raid instance in WoW at the moment, this little quest will likely push me into "Revered" status with the Keepers of Time. And that means...

...Continuum Blade.

Serpentshrine

This highlight reel is absolutely phenomenal.

Goooooooooaaaaaaalllll!!!!

Again, the weekly goal is mine. Check out the gems I put in the sockets on my Armory profile...they're pretty sweet. Plus, as a nice bonus, I picked up a new wand. These items brought my hit points up to more than 10k and my +damage up to 674.

I had a great time this weekend playing WoW, although the WSG holiday made me want to shoot myself...you still get more honor per minute in an AV match. I never wanted to kill another Horde again after racking up 533 kills in one day. (Seed of Corruption + the narrow passes leading into the Stormpike Graveyard in Alterac Valley = win)

After grabbing the hood, it was off to work on my Karazhan key. To unlock Black Morass for later, I ran a PUG Old Hillsbrad that went fairly smoothly. Then I it was off to grab fragments 2 & 3 for my key.

After a terribad PUG in the Steam Vaults that fell apart before we downed the first boss, I just cut my losses and grabbled key fragment #2 in the water. Then, I jumped in with a fantastic PUG group and we cleared out Arcatraz. All that remains is to run Black Morass and get Medivh to activate my key and then....Karazhan!

Watercolor Memories

I wish I had been around in the good ol' days.

Warsong Gulch PvP Holiday

I'm not sure what I think about this. I mean, I am maxed out already on my AV tokens. They get mailed to me now and expire in my inbox. And it seems like all the competent players have gone in for the WSG holiday, because Alliance is barely sliding by, full of turtles and AFK'ers, in AV the last two days.

The Warsong Gulch holiday means:
double reputation bonus for each flag captured on your team. The winning team will earn an additional 100 bonus honor (at level 60) for completing the match, in addition to the usual 20 bonus. The losing team will earn 60 bonus honor at the end of the match. Thus a 3-0 match will award a total of 240 bonus honor to the winners, and 60 honor to the losers during the holiday.
That doesn't stack up very well per game to Alterac Valley even on a non-AV-holiday weekend. But, WSG is faster that AV, so you have to just keep queuing up to get comparable honor. I don't know how this stacks up...I guess I'm about to find out lol.

9800 honor points on the way to the weekly goal. I'm more than halfway there..can I finish this tonight?!

Cranky Lock

Sorry, guys, I didn't mean to be such a killjoy.

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Warning! The Gulch is No Place for Practice!

Last night I had the brilliant idea of queuing up for WSG to a) practice using other pets in PvP besides my felguard and b) get the kinks out of my strategy in preparation for the upcoming PvP holiday. (One of the great things about WoW is that every weekend is a holiday.)

The latter was pretty successful; the former was an absolute nightmare.

Let me get this out there: I am horrible with my standard pets. Voidwalker is only good in PvP for the shield and is usually replaced with an instasummon. (However, in AV, I've found him to be a great honor point machine...use him to tank the Horde npcs in the towers while you capture them.) Succubus, eh...can't withstand the soul link and I'm okay with the seduction, but I have yet to create any "focus" macros so she's high maintenance (as one might expect of a succubus).

With the felhunter, I am an absolute disaster. I really need to stop being so damn lazy and go grab a pet focus/ability macro from the forums.

To the point: I tried to practice with my felhunter, and got totally destroyed. Not one single HK while I had the little zergling out. I finally gave up, re-summoned my FG, and continued as usual.

I still want to learn to use the felhunter more effectively, as the casters can be a real pain in the Arena.

As far as the strategy honing:
1) Stay with your people! You win WSG when you zerg, you lose when you go solo.
2) Use the map! The map tracks the location of the flags. VERY helpful when your flag has been captured or when you're trying to assist the flag bearer.
3) Stock up on soul shards to the max...the massive battles require a lot of your shadowfury and other shard-eating abilities, and you'd better be ready unless you want to hang out with Gelpep all day.

Sitting at about 7k honor, on course to the weekly goal this week. Stay tuned.

The Wall, and Hitting It

I played far too many hours this past week. I am burned out a bit. Although yesterday's honor point fix made me very happy, and I was able to grab the second epic item I earned over the weekend, I feel the need to dial it down a bit this week. So, tonight I'll probably squeeze in one or two AV matches, cook dinner, and take a break, possibly until Thursday.

July 4 weekend on the horizon: I'm very happy. I am taking two days off and that means 5 straight nights of PvP/Kara key/Arena madness. So the plan is the use the weeks between now and then to rest up, get workouts back on track, and get ready for the break. I hope to come out on the other side of that vacation with my full Dreadweave battlegrounds set, and possibly the war staff. Drooooool.

New Weekly Goal!

Okay, going for a big one now: Grand Marshal's Dreadweave Hood. Wish me luck. I figure, if I earned an excess of 22K this past week, an 18.6K item should be much, much easier.

Draw Me!

Sweet.

Honor Fixed?

My friends who are logged in at the moment tell me the missing honor points have returned...sweet! That means I can get my epic cuffs when I get home!

L2IRL

I have got to get my life back in some sort of balance. I love this game, but my extended play times are starting to harm me physically. I don't work out in the mornings anymore, and I'm losing all the gains I made in the gym because I'd rather be playing WoW. And, my back is really, really bothering me, and I am 100 percent sure that extended hours in slouched positions in front of my laptop are to blame.

There is a great podcast on this over at Taverncast. Taverncast After Hours #3 for the win.

So here's what I'm thinking. I'm thinking I will work out 4 days a week in the gym, really, really hard. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Cardio, every day. Then I'll play in the mornings as I have time. At night, I will play while Laurie is in the shower, or when she's at class. Then have my Friday/Saturday night craziness.

Weekly Goal, Honor Points, and Drama Drama Drama

The Sergeant's Heavy Cape...is mine. Epic cape FTW.

This weekend was crazy. We had guild drama, server drama, missing honor points drama, and baby's momma drama (not really).

The biggest news this weekend was the Cyclone battle group servers going on vacation. First, our kills for the day and estimated honor for the day didn't roll over to the yesterday column for two days. Not a big deal, right?

Wrong.

The honor accumulated for two days. When it finally did roll over, it only rolled one of the days' honor totals. The rest of the honor points are missing in action. Blizz has no freakin' clue what's going on.

The good news: weekly goal accomplished. The bad news: had the honor rolled over, I'd have nailed down a nice bonus from the PvP holiday that wasn't.

Sort of good news: blizz says they're workin' on it.

The PvP holiday for AV is here! I played this morning and earned around 1100 honor points, which puts me at 7480 or so points. Three or four good AV runs could put me over the top! Scarlet Monastery Cathedral: 1 pull

Hobbs is awesome.

3/5 to Goal!

I have accumulated around 6300 honor points so far for the weekly goal. That leaves around 4700 to go. I think I'm there. Once the PvP holiday hits I'm all set.

I've been signing up for Warsong Gulch and Alterac Valley simultaneously...I usually get 2 WGs in before I drop into AV, so I get a nice balance of honorable kills and bonus honor points. I finally made the 1000 Horde kill milestone last night. Wee!

No playtime tonight, which is fine by me. It's my anniversary. Four years with my wonderful wife who puts up with more than she should. I love her so much.

Weekly Goal, Back on Track

Roughly halfway to the goal. Looks like easy cheese to get the honor points for the Sergeant's Heavy Cape by the end of the weekend, especially since its a PvP holiday for Alterac Valley....that will mean massive, massive honor points per game.

Spent an hour this morning in Warsong Gulch to try to get some quick honor. Allies 1, Horde 2. I got pwned repeatedly by a blood elf paladin pretty boy. /hellfiremyselftodeathnowplz

Things everyone (including me) need to learn about Warsong Gulch:

  • Stop fighting mid-field and go get the frakkin' flag.
  • Do not go to the center of the gulch and fight with the other side at the expense of capturing the flag.
  • Skip the large melee in the center and go retrieve the sheet on a pole that bears the opposing faction's insignia.

Thank you, that is all.

YOU ARE NOT PREP ... stabbitystabbitypwnpwnpwn-gurgle-dies

Did someone page me? Where does it hurt?

WTF is an "Arawn" ?

I am very proud of my name. Most people have no clue who "Arawn" is, and this makes me sad. So here's a brief primer:

Arawn is the name of the main antagonist in The Chronicles of Prydain. (For those who haven't read it, think The Black Cauldron, the Disney movie that smashed all the books/characters/plotlines into an animated farce.)

Arawn is the ruler of the Annuvin, the Land of the Dead. He is a dark sorcerer who steals mankind's secrets and hordes them in his treasure vaults, not to use them himself but to prevent them from being used by anyone. He is attended by the Cauldron Born and the Huntsmen of the Annuvin.

Basically, he's the Darth Vader of one of the best young adult fantasy series ever written.

He's inspired by the Welsh lord of the dead.

So yes, my warlock's name rocks.

Weekly Goal Thwarted!

Well, I have egg on my face. When I set a goal of earning the roughly 8000 honor points I need for my weekly goal (see previous post), I did not account for the lack of playtime I'd have this week.

Thursday is my anniversary, and this morning's early scheduled (ha...two hours earlier than usual) maintenance put a kink into a couple of hours I had accounted for. So, if I do Karazhan key runs or raid with the guild...bleh.

Looks like long nights on Saturday and Sunday of PvP madness.

Tangental note: what the heck is the matter with people at the official warlock forums? OMG, a cesspool of 14-year-old crybabies and egomaniacs...I post occassionally, but good grief - these people are scary.

Let's Get It On!

Greetings people!

I love to write. I love to play WoW. Sometimes when two passions love each other a stork brings them a blog.

First, the intro: me.

I have been 70 for oh, about 3 days IRL. I have a demanding job, a wife I love, and things I care about other than WoW. You should expect many posts about balancing these sorts of things with a game whose designers engineered it to inspire a constant tugging in customers' brains to get the next bigger, better omgloots.

This week's goal: PvP honor points for the Sergeant's Heavy Cape.
Current honor points: 3100+.
Cost for the goal: 11100 honor points.

Let's get it on!
